U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized 349 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2018. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.
The Meramec Valley R-III School District (MVR-III) is proud to announce that Nike Elementary School is one of the 349 schools in the nation, and only eight in Missouri, to earn the 2018 National Blue Ribbon Award by the U.S. Department of Education.
“I'm pleased to celebrate with you as your school is named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a video message to the honorees. “We recognize and honor your important work in preparing students for successful careers and meaningful lives. Congratulations on your students' accomplishments and for your extraordinary commitment to meeting their unique needs.”
The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.
MVR-III school board president, Matt Trower, commented: “The MVR-III Board of Education is extremely proud of the hard work our dedicated leaders, staff, and students have put into achieving the National Blue Ribbon award at Nike Elementary. We realize the National Blue Ribbon award is one of the most prestigious and difficult awards to achieve in the country, and our entire district should be filled with pride. Prior to 2018’s award winners, only 78 of Missouri’s more than 500 school districts have had the honor of achieving the award in its 35-year history. To say this is a rare and difficult accomplishment would be an understatement. However, we are continuously reminded that no accomplishment is impossible for our amazing staff and students. Congratulations Nike Elementary, you have made us all proud!”
Nike Principal, David Quanz, credits this success to its outstanding teachers, students, and families. Nike Elementary School has an enrollment of approximately 125 students, which provides educators opportunities to build authentic relationships with kids and families alike. The staff believes these positive relationships are key to the success in supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally.
Dr. Jonathan Mulford, Superintendent of schools stated, “The Meramec Valley School District is truly honored and humbled to have Nike Elementary designated as a National Blue Ribbon School. This recognition is a testament to both current and past faculty and staff who pour their heart and soul into the teaching profession. It also reflects upon both the previous administration and the School Board’s support of continuous improvement. Looking ahead, MVR-III will continue to build upon the foundation that has been laid as we continue to provide new and exciting opportunities for our students.”
Nike Elementary is also the proud recipient of the Missouri Gold Star School recognition in 2006 and 2018. All National Blue Ribbon schools will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 8, 2018. In addition, the school district will host a reception in honor of Nike Elementary students, faculty, and staff on November 20, 2018.
