Jenna Alt Receives Homegrown Hero Award

For the past eight years, local dairy farmers have saluted standouts in the community who improve the lives of others with the Homegrown Hero Award. Implemented by St. Louis District Dairy Council (SLDDC), the award rallies schools to nominate those who make a difference.

On May 8, the SLDDC awarded the grand prize Missouri Homegrown Hero Award to Jenna Alt of Pacific, MO. Alt has taught Family and Consumer Science in the Meramec R-III School District for the past 16 years. Currently Alt is a teacher at Riverbend Middle School and is known for teaching her students how to navigate common challenges that adults face in their careers, homes, and family lives, as well as for her mentorship and support of students.

“She makes a huge impact on our students and families throughout our district with her profound knowledge base and compassion for helping others,” said Lindsy Hendricks, the district’s health coordinator, who nominated Alt. “She is a true role model for our students and someone they look up to. You will find her volunteering for local community events, attending students’ games, and, overall, being a constant in their lives."

Schools across Missouri and Illinois submitted nominations earlier this year for the Homegrown Hero campaign. The contest encouraged schools to share their nominee’s story in their own way. Letters, essays, photos and videos all detailed inspiring stories of those who strive to improve the lives of others every day. Overall, seven individuals in Missouri and eight individuals in Illinois were nominated for the award. SLDDC selected two grand prize winners — one in Missouri and one in Illinois.

“Each year, we learn about the amazing contributions of the nominated individuals. They all do phenomenal work right here in our own backyard. It’s wonderful to learn about school cafeteria workers, teachers, principals, custodians and volunteers who creatively and tirelessly work to make their communities a better place,” said Jessica Kassel, SLDDC Nutrition Educator.

Thanks to their own contributions to their communities, local dairy farmers are a natural fit for recognizing those who go the extra mile. “Not only do farmers provide safe and wholesome food but they are also invested in the welfare of their communities. They take care of their cows, the land and their neighbors. When it comes to heroes, we like to say that it takes one to know one,” Kassel said.
