Students from Mrs. Vogt's 7th-grade ELA classes at Riverbend Middle School recently participated in a heartfelt project to honor the men and women who have served our country. As part of the school’s ongoing commitment to respect, gratitude, and community service, students wrote personal letters to veterans participating in the Honor Flight program.

Honor

Honor Flight is a national organization dedicated to transporting America’s veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor. Each veteran on an Honor Flight receives a “Mail Call” — a surprise packet of letters from family, friends, and community members expressing appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

Riverbend students embraced this opportunity to show their support. During class, students wrote thoughtful messages thanking veterans for their bravery, dedication, and commitment to protecting the nation’s freedoms. 7th grader Wyatt Rowden said, "it felt good to write letters to someone who doesn't know us and to be able to make their day."

“As students wrote letters and cards to our veteran, you could sense that they felt good knowing they were expressing gratitude and kindness to someone who had sacrificed for their country.,” said Mrs. Vogt. “For some students that have parents serving, I feel it really hit home with them because they had an understanding of what these men and women went through."

Projects like this help Riverbend Middle School students understand the importance of gratitude and service while strengthening the connection between school and community. The letters were recently delivered to veterans on their Honor Flight journey, serving as a powerful reminder that their sacrifices have not been forgotten.
