National School of Character

May 22, 2025 – Pacific, MO – Zitzman Elementary is honored to be recognized as a 2025 National School of Character by Character.org—the highest recognition a school can receive for character education. This distinction affirms Zitzman’s unwavering commitment to fostering a community where students thrive not only academically, but as kind, empathetic, and responsible individuals.

"This award is a celebration of our staff, students, and community coming together to create something truly special," said Dr. Jenna Sladek, Principal of Zitzman Elementary. Assistant Principal, Mrs. Pruett would add, "It represents who we are—a school that puts people first, sees every day as a chance to grow in character, and believes deeply in the power of connection."

Zitzman's journey is a testament to resilience and unity. After merging with Truman Elementary due to district restructuring, Zitzman welcomed 150 new students, 13 new staff members, and two new administrators. Through this transition, the school embraced a unifying motto: Root and Rise—a call to strengthen deep roots and grow together as one family.

Character isn’t a program at Zitzman—it’s a way of life. From cross-grade Tribe Time family groups and thoughtful service learning projects, to daily opportunities for student leadership, classroom-based emotional regulation tools, and goal-setting, every element of school life is intentionally designed to build character.

Some highlights from the National School of Character process specific to Zitzman Elementary are:

  • Service Learning with Purpose: Multi-age tribes engage in student-driven service learning projects, like designing brochures for Pacific’s Red Cedar Inn, collecting supplies for Dirk’s Fund Dog Rescue, and crafting gifts for local nursing home residents. Even staff model service learning through a project honoring a colleague by building an outdoor classroom.

  • A Culture of Belonging: Practices like the 10x2 relationship-building initiative, buddy classrooms, and a strong Watch D.O.G.S. program foster connection and trust. Evaluators noted, “A high level of trust has been established among staff, students, and families.”

  • Student Voice and Leadership: From Library Leaders to Announcement Leaders, students are empowered to lead with purpose and develop their own moral compass.

  • Impact You Can Feel and Measure: In five years, Zitzman’s office referrals dropped significantly, and 90% of parents report character growth in their children. Student and staff feedback reflects a school community where respect, empathy, and joy are daily norms.

As one parent shared during the evaluation, “Character at Zitzman is intentional. You can see it in the way students treat each other and the pride they take in leading.”

Zitzman Elementary joins a prestigious network of schools committed to character excellence. This designation will remain in place for five years and serves as a beacon for other schools seeking to grow in character and connection.
