The Meramec Valley R-III School District was recently recognized for its participation in the Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring Program. According to a recent Washington Missourian news article, MVR-III is currently the only Franklin County school district to partner with Oasis. We are also excited to share that the district will pilot the Oasis Math Program this year, with a full rollout planned for the 2026–27 school year.
The Oasis Tutoring Program is a wonderful opportunity that brings older adults and young learners together in meaningful ways. Oasis trains volunteers ages 55 and older to work with kindergarten through 3rd grade students using engaging reading and language development activities designed by reading professionals. Tutors meet with students weekly throughout the school year, building academic skills while also forming lasting relationships. On any given day in our elementary schools, you might find them reading books, writing stories, playing chess, or simply being a trusted mentor and friend. Their presence makes a lasting difference in the lives of our children.
This marks the fifth year of Meramec Valley’s partnership with Oasis, and we are so fortunate to have 21 dedicated volunteers supporting our students. Looking ahead, our district goal is to grow the program to 30 volunteers. If you know someone aged 55 or older who would enjoy making a difference in a child’s life, please encourage them to get involved by signing up at bit.ly/mvr3oasis. The initial training will be Thursday, Oct. 2, from 9 AM to 1 PM in the MVR-III Central Office Board Room. A follow-up training will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, from 8:30 to 9:30 AM in the same location.
